An Annual Coastal Celebration

The Carlsbad Beach Fest was founded to draw awareness to the importance of Carlsbad’s coastal resources through environmental efforts. The Fest’s mission is “to promote clean beaches, environmental stewardship, and public stewardship and outreach.” This year’s 7th Annual Carlsbad Beach Fest on June 14 will once again be hosted at Tamarack State Beach with lots of fun activities for kids and adults to take part in.

The Fest continues to grow and improve each year, and according to Executive Director of Carlsbad Beach Fest, Mat Huff, is now recognized as one of Carlsbad’s most important events of the year. Mat recalled the first Beach Fest where about 250 people showed up. “It was a cloudy and cold day. I think we only had something like four or five pop-up canopies on the sand at Tamarack State Beach, and I was waving a sign and announcing (more like shouting) to everyone that passed by that the Carlsbad Beach Fest was taking place on the beach below.” The event was still successful however, due to the number of volunteers that signed up, the trash clean-ups that took place, and the educational outreach.

The Fest has come a long way since that cold day in 2007. “The Carlsbad Beach Fest has grown in size and attendance every year. In 2013 there were an estimated 10,000 to 12,000 attendees. “We expect even more to attend this year,” noted Mat.
Activities on this year’s agenda include educational booths, live music, Taiko drummers, professional sand sculpting, beach clean ups, an environmentally 5K and free one-mile kids fun run, community arts projects, WOW bubbles, a pro/am surf contest and more. Additional recycling efforts are being made including using multi-gallon water dispensers, FSC-certified biodegradable cups, reusable water bottles, and more.

Some of this year’s partners include Surf Ride, Medics on the Ball, Swim Labs, Señor Grubby’s, Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation, Surfrider Foundation, San Diego Coastkeeper, I Love a Clean San Diego, San Marcos Veteran Center, Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center, and Board and Brew.

Beach Fest is in need of new volunteers and partners. If you are interested in helping out this year’s event or a future event visit www.carlsbadbeachfest.com.
