Local Hidden Gem

volunteer_bringuler1When Katie Bringuier and her family moved to Carlsbad in 2012, they immediately fell in love with the beaches and the family-focused community. “I love how friendly everyone is and how everyone is so willing to help their neighbors – it’s inspiring. I want to be a part of that and help the community I hold so very close to my heart,” revealed Katie. After a time at home with her two small children Katie began looking for volunteer opportunities that matched her public relations skill set. She found that opportunity with the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation. “Talking with some of the directors at the foundation, I learned that many Carlsbad families don’t know about this hidden gem. At that moment, I knew my public relations skills could be put to good use helping to promote the Foundation and Discovery Center,” stated Katie. Her first volunteer assignment was as a photographer for the Foundation’s gala event, and she has been active and involved with the organization ever since.

According to Katie, Agua Hedionda Lagoon is a wonderful place for families to visit and learn about the wetland environment, as well as the lagoon’s importance to the local ecosystem and the wildlife that lives there. The Foundation supports many activities at the lagoon, including field trips for school children, scout programs, and stewardship and preservation of the lagoon and surrounding trails. The Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation also holds special events for all ages, including Night at the Museum movie nights and book readings. “We are very excited to have Janell Cannon, the author of the beloved children’s book Stellaluna, perform a reading at our October Night at the Museum event,” related Katie. For more information about this or other events, or to find out how to volunteer for the Foundation, Katie encourages Carlsbad residents to visit www.lagoon.aguahedionda.org.

When Katie is not lending her public relations expertise to the Agua Hedionda Foundation, she can be found spending time with her husband Jonathan, their two children Camden and Natalie, and their two dogs. “Most of my hobbies include a double jogging stroller! We love going for walks around our neighborhood and the lagoon trails. We also spend a lot of time at the library and the beach,” said Katie. She has also started a public relations consulting business that she is hoping to further develop over the coming year.
