The State Beach Classic, an annual surf contest put on by the State Beach Locals Surf Club (SBLSC), recently attracted surfers and non-surfers alike to Tamarack Beach. The contest was created to give back to Carlsbad and as a tribute to local professional surfer Banning Capps, who died in 2000. For the past four years SBLSC has selected the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad (BGCC) to be one of the beneficiaries of the event and this year they were able to raise $2,800. Event organizer Phil Antonopoulos said, “We are always excited to produce this annual event, but the best part is knowing that the money we raise goes to such a good local cause. The BGCC impacts so many kids’ lives with their amazing programs and we are proud to donate our proceeds to them.” The contest allows all ages, genders, and skill levels to compete. The State Beach Cup was awarded to Carlsbad’s own professional surfer Gabe Garcia. For more information visit or
