Superstar Athlete

student_onstott2Taylor Onstott has been playing water polo since she was 11 years old. “I enjoy its competitiveness and uniqueness,” said Taylor. “There are not many sports like it. It takes a lot of sacrifice and dedication, but the payoff is really rewarding.”

And for Taylor, the payoff has been extraordinarily fulfilling. Twice, she has been the recipient of the Avocado West League Player of the Year and three times her team has been awarded the Avocado West League First Team and the ALL-CIF First Team. She has also been recognized as Scholar Athlete, All-Academic Team, USA Water Polo Academic All-American, and Honorable Mention All-American in the 2016 National Junior Olympics.

Most recently, Taylor committed to playing on the Girls Water Polo Team at University of California, San Diego.  “In November, I went down to the Hall of Champions and signed my National Letter of Intent with UCSD,” recalled Taylor. “After my recruit trip I knew it was the place for me.”  Taylor explained that she was drawn to UCSD both for its caliber of athleticism as well as for its challenging academic program. “More than anything,” she added, “I’m proud to represent the place I grew up.”

student_onstott3Taylor has resided in Carlsbad with her family – dad, John; mom, Gina; brother, Jack; and sister, Brittany – for the past 12 years. “I love the small town beach feel,” she shared. “I’ve loved being able to grow up and go to school with kids I’ve known since first grade.”

Currently attending her senior year at Carlsbad High School, Taylor said her favorite subject is English. “Literature fuels my creative side,” she explained. “I think it’s one of the most important subjects because it reminds us all that knowledge is connected.”

But what Taylor has enjoyed most about school has been being part of the water polo team. “My teammates have made my high school experience truly special,” gushed Taylor. “I would not be the person I am today without them. They push me to be my best every day. They have taught me what sacrifice and commitment mean. They support me in all my goals and believe in me no matter what.”
