The City of Carlsbad has named Michael D. Calderwood, a Fire Department veteran, as its new fire chief. Calderwood has prepared for this new role with more than 20 years of service in positions of increasing leadership. Fire Chief Mike Davis announced his retirement earlier this year, and Calderwood will be transitioned to the position soon.

Calderwood began his career in the City of Pismo Beach as a firefighter/EMT and joined the City of Carlsbad Fire Department in 2003. He most recently served as a division chief. Calderwood has served in roles including executive leadership, resource management, labor/management relations, emergency planning, professional standards, mentoring, and employee wellness. In 2017, he graduated from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government’s Senior Executives in State and Local Governments Program. He is also a 2013 graduate of LEAD San Diego.
